Zachary Dearman-Paron

Hey There
I am a dedicated and passionate library professional with over a decade of experience in the education and information services sector. Having spent ten years as a high school English teacher, I have honed my skills in guiding diverse student populations toward academic success, with a focus on critical thinking, literacy, and comprehensive engagement. My transition into library services has allowed me to expand my professional reach, blending my teaching background with my growing expertise in information systems, digital resources, and community outreach.
I serve as a Library Associate I at the Jordan-Newby Anchor Branch Library, part of the Norfolk Public Library in Norfolk, Virginia. I work closely with patrons and colleagues in this role to provide exceptional customer service, maintain collection integrity, and facilitate educational programming. My duties include reference assistance, coordinating community programs, and ensuring the library's offerings remain relevant to the community’s needs. I have also updated and organized digital resources to support the library’s transition to more robust online services. This position has deepened my appreciation for public libraries as critical hubs for lifelong learning and community engagement, particularly in underserved areas.
I am also nearing the completion of my Master’s in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from Syracuse University, where my coursework has focused on collection development, information literacy instruction, and emerging technologies. One of my key projects included designing a collection development policy tailored to the African-American Cultural Center Library, with attention to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in library resources. Another critical project is the accessibility audit of the Park Place Neighborhood Branch Library, which includes updated signage and furniture, collection reorganization, staff training, and specialized supplies and equipment acquisition. This academic journey has significantly enhanced my understanding of the evolving role of libraries in the digital age, equipping me with the tools to lead forward-thinking initiatives in public or academic library settings.
My career is guided by a strong commitment to creating inclusive, accessible spaces where people from all walks of life can pursue knowledge and personal growth. I believe in the transformative power of libraries, not only as places for reading and research and as platforms for social connection and digital literacy. Throughout my work and academic experiences, I have developed a keen understanding of how libraries can support marginalized communities, particularly through targeted outreach and tailored programming.
Beyond my professional work, I enthusiastically advocate for integrating technology into library services. I am adept at using digital tools for cataloging, reference work, and patron engagement, and I am particularly interested in how libraries can leverage technology to reach new audiences. I am always eager to learn new systems and approaches to ensure library services remain innovative and relevant in our rapidly changing world.
I bring a unique blend of educational, technical, and managerial skills to my work in the library field. With a deep respect for the role of public institutions in society and a passion for fostering equitable access to information, I am excited to continue contributing to the growth and evolution of libraries as vibrant, inclusive spaces for all.
